Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Special Education is defined as “specially designed instruction, at no cost to parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.”  Special education is in place to provide additional services, support, programs, specialized placements or environments to ensure that all students’ educational needs are provided for. I think it is really great that schools provide this for children with disabilities. They deserve to have everyone that other children have. Throughout school, I met some of the sweetest children who attended my schools special education program. They always wanted to be a part of our activities and were always welcomed. I remember this one guy named Alex and he would ask all the girls their birthday and any time he saw them in the hall, he could tell you the date and never be wrong. I always thought it was amazing at how smart and loving they were. They didn’t choose the life that was given to them yet they always had smiles on their faces. I don’t know what all the students learn in the classroom, but I know they have wonderful teachers who really help them out and care about them. I was honored to graduate with several of the sweetest people I have ever met and it was very touching to see them walk across the stage to get their diploma like everyone after all the hard work they have accomplished. I think it really helps these children to be socialized just like everyone else.
