Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), Special Education is defined as “specially designed instruction, at no cost to parents, to meet the unique needs of a child with a disability.” Special education is in place to provide additional services, support, programs, specialized placements or environments to ensure that all students’ educational needs are provided for. I think it is really great that schools provide this for children with disabilities. They deserve to have everyone that other children have. Throughout school, I met some of the sweetest children who attended my schools special education program. They always wanted to be a part of our activities and were always welcomed. I remember this one guy named Alex and he would ask all the girls their birthday and any time he saw them in the hall, he could tell you the date and never be wrong. I always thought it was amazing at how smart and loving they were. They didn’t choose the life that was given to them yet they always had smiles on their faces. I don’t know what all the students learn in the classroom, but I know they have wonderful teachers who really help them out and care about them. I was honored to graduate with several of the sweetest people I have ever met and it was very touching to see them walk across the stage to get their diploma like everyone after all the hard work they have accomplished. I think it really helps these children to be socialized just like everyone else.
Most kids say they want to be a doctor when they grow up. Also, most parents want their children to grow up to be doctors and make a lot of money. So, why do we think so highly of doctors?
Doctors have a huge amount of social power, political power, and prestige. We trust doctors with our lives and hope that they will cure us with whatever may be wrong with us at a given time. One reason doctors have so much social prestige is their individualized objectivity, which gives them a certain power in their relationships with clients. Doctors sometimes have to get very personal with a patient depending on what their field (I’ll let you use your imagine on those). Not everyone would want to perform these exams, but it has to be done in order to make patients healthy.
In the video we watched in class, “Frontline: Sick Around the World”, it really amazed me to see how little doctors were paid. I was also amazed to see how cheap their healthcare was. It said that in Japan the prices aren’t really high enough to keep the hospitals running. This was very shocking to me that doctors weren’t paid very much compared to the doctors in the U.S. It seemed to me that they don’t care how much doctors are paid for what they are doing. Though the doctors themselves seemed to want more money and I would to if I was doing the work that they are. Especially if i was a doctor in Japan where the people can go to any specialist at any time without an appointment. If I wasa doctor that would be very stressful to me and very discouraging as a career for all the hard school work and not getting paid a lot.
I believe it comes down to what you value most and in the other countries it seems that they value having cheaper healthcare for everyone. and this cuts down on doctor’s pay

Race is a group of people who share a set of characteristics, typically physical ones, and are said to share a common bloodline. There are 6 different things that we see in others in order to say they are a certain race. The first one is externally imposed which means someone else defines you as black, white, or other. The second is involuntary which means it’s not up to you to decide which category you belong. The third is usually based on physical differences. The fourth is hierarchal which means if you aren’t a certain race, you go down the ranks in number. The fifth is exclusive which means you don’t get to check more than one box. The last one is unequal which means it’s about power conflicts and struggles.
Do we want others to define us or do we want to define ourselves? When you let others define who you are that’s when a lot of problems come to play. We could eliminate the term race and solely go by ethnicity. Ethnicity is one’s ethnic quality or affliation. It isvoluntary, self-defined, nonhierarchal, fluid and multiple, and basedon cultural differences, not physical ones. This allows you to define who you are and it can be based on your cultural differnces like language, food, music, etc. instead of by skin color or the way someone looks. This allows you to acknowledge more than one category you may fall into as well. You can claim to be Italian and German and this will be accepted.
I think if we go by ethnicity and not by race then rascism wouldn’t exist anymore between any races. You wouldn’t have to worry about it as much because people woould see how they are equal and alike. They would see that they have more in common and wouldn’t pay attention to the color of their skin.

Gender roles are sets of behavioral norms assumed to ccomany one’s status as a male or female. In Disney movies The male characters are generally created to be very masculine, like in the image above. They are usually pretty strong, have big muscles, handsome, and can do just about anything they want. One thing In Disney movies that is seen a lot is the fighing of the male characters and that it is okay to fight. They show how it is right and how it makes them look tough, but it doesn’t teach young boys that it can get them into trouble. Do we want to send this message out to young boys? I think they should know their consquences.
Acting like a man and fighting can really lead to bad consquences. The main one being jail. Even though in movies it is seen as a very masculine trait to fight, it is considered assault in reality. You can be charged and sent to jail. Also, you could really hurt someone and that is never good. I know women want a masculine man but they do not want an abusive man. Is there an opposite side to this?
Hmmm,..on the other hand, society doesn’t accept a feminine man. This isn’t right to them. Society doesn’t think a man should wear makeup, dresses, play with dolls, carry purses, etc. Does this really make him less of a man/boy? In most cases the men who do prefer this are homosexual and probably don’t care about their masculinity.
So which is right? Well some theorists argue that today there exists a hegemonic masculinity. Hegemonic Masculinity is described by Erving Goffman as a young man who is married, white, urban, northern, heterosexual, Protestant, father, of college education, fully emplyed, of good complexion, weight and height, and with a decent record in sports. In my opinion, I would want a guy who has a mixture of both. I wouldn’t want a guy who would beat me or anything, and I don’t want a guy that I can beat up. I want a masculine guy who can defend me when needed but who is also sensitive and sweet. But we hardly get what we want. haha.
The Upper Class is associated with income, wealth, power, and prestige. Who are those primarily in the upper class? CEOs, government officials, celebrities, very successful professionals, and those born into it belong to the upper class. People of the upper class often have a better influence on political decisions because they can invest in ways to campaign for their party.
I’ve always found it interesting that the president and past government officials have always wanted to take away more money from the middle class(working classs) when it comes to pay cuts. Why should we risk the middle class falling down into poverty by cutting their pay? I think that pay cuts should come from the government officials especially since presidents are paid for life a very high salary. This doesn’t seem right for those who claim to be for the poor but do not give their money to the poor. Also, I think that some jobs have different priorities when it comes to salary. for instance, professional athletes get paid a lot of money when teachers who are helping educate the future generations aren’t getting paid nearly enough. I could be wrong but this seems a bit reversed to me. Sadly, our society appreciates athletes or celebrities more than teachers, nurses, and other lower paid jobs that should have a higher pay.
Who determines who is part of the upper class? I would place doctors, pharmacists, lawyers, etc, in the upper class if I was able to choose because I believe that these professions deserve to be paid well enough to be in the upper class. I do not think that celebrities should be a part of this. They are not saving anybody’s life or changing the world. They are just a form of entertainment.

One may ask what causes a person to take their own life and I think it is difficult for society to understand why a person would wanna commit suicide. Some factors that we as individuals believe lead to suicide are mental illness, depression, alcohol or drug addiction, divorce, job loss, or banctruptcy. These are generally part of a more complex problem though. Killing yourself is considered a sin in most religions and is a violation of social norms.
Durkheim believed these indiviualistic accounts of suicide were inaduate.Durkheim wrote a book called, Suicide, that “sought to prove that the act of killing oneself cannot be explained solely by individual psychological characteristics, rather that suicide is also a product of social forces. Durkheim developed a normative theory of suicide. In his study he found that in Europe, Protestants killed themselves most often, followed by catholics and then jews. I found this very interesting since suicide is one of the bigger sins in religion, especially for protestants. I know I have been taught all my life in church that if I take my own life or “play God” that I will not go to Heaven. So, it really shocked me to see that the highest amount of people in Europe commiting suicide were protestants.
There are four types of suicide. Egoistic suicide occurs when one is not well integrated into a social group. Altruistic suicide occurs when one experinces too much social integration. Anomic suicide occurs as a result of too little social regulation. Fatalistic suicide occurs as a result of too much social regulation.
I never have fully understood how bad one’s life could be to kill yourself. During my middle and high school years, we lost several students who took their own lives and it’s devastating for the ones they leave behind. Especially the teenagers who believe they have no friends or family who care about them. Social groups play a huge part in our lives and when we don’t feel like we fit in, who we aren’t good enough, or we are bullied then this leads to the thought of suicide which most likely ends with suicide. I believe too many people use it a an easy solution to a problem that could be solved in a better way. These people have way too much to live for than to dwell on what others think and definitely shouldn’t want to end their life.
A feral child is a human child who has lived isolated from human contact from a very young age, and has little or no experience of human care, loving or social behavior, and lack human language. Feral children are confined by humans and brought up by animals or live in the wild in isolation.
There have been over a hundred cases of feral children reported, and possibly more that haven’t been discovered yet. One of the first famous feral child is Wild Peter. after being discovered he never really learned to talk except “Peter” and “King George”. He did have a great sense of smell and could hear very well. He climbed trees and lived off plants. Once he was found, he refused bread. He spent about 68 years in society and never really learned to communicate.
One example of a feral child that we should all be familiar with is Disney’s Tarzan. Tarzan was raised by gorillas in the jungle. He acted like a gorilla and couldn’t speak. He swung from trees like the other gorillas. The gorillas treated him as one of their own. As a child, I enjoyed watching Tarzan but I never really thought of it as a bad thing. The gorillas didn’t harm him and they took good care of him. Though, he did not have a normal life in society. After learning about feral children I found the story kinda sad. It makes you feel bad that he didn’t have a normal life.
It is really sad to me to think that children have been abandoned in the wild or their parents have isolated them. I do think it is incredible that some animals have nutured these children when ultimately they could have killed them at first. Instead these animals have raised the children the best they can and have thought them their instincts. the thing that really bothers me is that once these children are taken away, from what is now their environment, they are mainly studied by sociologists and psychologists and scientists. After what can be a very tramatic sitiuation these children need to be nutured. I feel bad for these children since they don’t really know how to show emotion and can’t speak to others about what the need or want. They seem to have it worse than babies since they can’t express this to other humans.
After learning about feral children it really made me appreciate my life and the education that I have received so far. I never thought I would be so thankful that I am able to speak and learn. I couldn’t imagine being raised by animals and learning their ways then trying to go back to human ways.
